Godzilla > Megatron

Gus, have you heard about a new Godzilla movie coming out in January? There was a preview that didn't explicitly show what was causing havoc through the eyes of a going away party for a guy leaving for Japan. And then they didn't even tell us the name of the movie. Well done teaser.
So we saw Transformers.
Remember way back when you were playing BATTLETECH pencil and paper style and thought, "Wouldn't this be an excellent video game?" Remember when you were playing all of the BATTLETECH video games and thought, "This would be the coolest live action movie ever!" The opening scene to Transformers is that coolest live action BATTLETECH movie ever! And then the movie is good but you are really just waiting for the next action sequence.
And Optimus saying, "Autobots, roll out!" brings tears to your eyes because it is done so well.
So it was a good movie but I can only say that beacuse I went into it expecting Transformers cannon to be messed with. And it was. Oh boy was it.

The trailer you mentioned is for a top secret movie codenamed Cloverfield. It's produced, as you saw in the credits by J.J. Abrams of Lost/Alias fame. The rumors are that the pitch for the movie is "The Blair Witch Project meets Godzilla remake." I don't think it'll actually be a Godzilla picture, since the picture is with Paramount and Sony still has the Gojira rights sewn up with Toho. There have been rumblings that the movies actual title is going to be Parasite, which leads me to believe that it might be inspired by or even a remake of The Host. Regardless, I'm on board. And I'm glad you liked the Transformers. I was sorta jonesing to see it today.

Ah, Tim, but is it as good as the the Zentradi invasion on Macross Island?

I didn't think so.

***May verge on spoilers***

The film was approximately 1,000,000,000,000 times better than my expectations. This disconnect probably has more to do with my complete lack of faith in Michael Bay's treatment of one of my most precious childhood memories than the actual quality of the film.

That being said, I have to agree with Tim that the opening scene, and really, almost all the CGI, was breathtaking. The main kid also had good timing and a naturalistic delivery. I liked him in spite of myself. The girl was nice to look at. And hey, John Turturro.

I could bitch about:
--the overt product placement deal with GM, and the subsequent changing of Bumblebee from a Bug into a Camaro (nice shout-out in the used car lot, though)
--the pat gung-ho American military characters
--the lack of ANY Decepticon characterizations (seriously? One line to encompass the entire troubled relationship between Megatron and Starscream?)

But I won't.

You clearly have to take the film for what it is: non-stop war porn. But if you can enjoy that, you're going to have a good time. I did.

Wolf, the kid, Shia LaBeouf, is worthy of being called awesome. Watch him in the movie HOLES. Watch the movie HOLES just for the movie itself. Excellent movie, great introduction to Shia. http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0479471/

He was on Jay Leno with Terry Bradshaw a month ago and hilarity ensued. The kid doesn't need a script to steal the show. That bit should get an Emmy.

Seriously.

I found that clip!

He looks like a young Matthew McConaughey there. I don't think Jay is funny but his joke about Terry's coat in the clip rolled me off the couch. Just to put this in perspective I have been known to skip church during football season just to watch Howie and Terry on FOX NFL Sunday. That guy cracks me up.

Why should I pay $13 for something that's etched permanently on my soul?
