Presto: Now You're Thinking With Portals

I'd never really made the connection between Portal and classic cartoon physics until I saw Presto, the short that's playing before Wall-E. Good stuff.

Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Back when Firefly came out I kinda sniffed at the show, thinking it was a Cowboy Bebop rip off. I was kinda right, but the show was still awesome. Now, Joss' new internet show (with some familiar faces) feels a lot to me, in name only at least, like an old Steven Coogan series, Dr. Terrible's House of Horrible. Probably no connection, right?

On a related note, if you haven't seen any of Steve Coogan's amazingly funny shows, you're really missing out. Who am I kidding? You guys will just wait for the U.S. remakes.

Seinfeld + D&D

Read the whole strip here. It's cute.

Proud Father

While the family was watching TV tonight (Nashville Star if you really want to know) there was a commercial for the all new Celebrity Family Feud. The question was, "If your love life was a traffic sign what would it say?" Without missing a beat Kya said, "The sign for my Mom and Dad's love life should be SLOW CHILDREN."

Netflix Profiles to be Eliminated

For anyone using the Profiles function in Netflix, note that it's going away in a couple months.

For those not familiar, Profiles let one split up an account into multiple queues and recommendation lists. For example, we have the 3-DVD plan. My wife has more time to watch movies, so I assigned 2 of the 3 slots to her. We have separate logins that take us to separate queues, for which we receive separate recommendations. It was very handy for anyone with different taste in film, and also set Netflix apart from competitors.

They're trying to spin this s a way to enhance ease of use, which is clearly bullshit, as anyone who finds the process too complex simply doesn't use it. To top it off, there is no system in place to merge the queues. Movies queued in separate Profiles will simply go away. They recommend you PRINT your queue out. On PAPER. So you can manually re-enter it into you main queue.

Disgusted.

The Good, The Bad & The Weird

Hot damn. That's Kang-ho Song from The Host and J.S.A. in all the funny hats -- he's right up there with my favorite actors right now.

Brawl in the Family

Here's that new Kirby-themed comic strip I mentioned. The art is really unfinished-feeling. You can tell the guy is just sketching out comedic ideas around Kirby and co, but many of them are quite fun.

Here's the link.

Five Reasons You Should Give Burn Notice a Chance

1. It clips along like a good Elmore Leonard novel, and I find myself caught up in the stories in much the same way.

2. Bruce Campbell!

3. The cast has instant chemistry- I really believed that the characters with histories had known each other for a long time.

4. Did I mention Bruce Campbell?

5. You can watch the entire first season, at your leisure, online. (warning: linked site plays obnoxious music for one minute)

The Robotech Movie

Lawrence Kasdan, writer of Raiders of the Lost Ark and The Empire Strikes Back, has been hired to pen the screenplay. Who knows if he still has it thirty years later? Hopefully he and his son commune frequently on the subject of film work.

Spore is really, really cool.

I've only been fooling around with the Spore Creature Creator for five minutes and I'm already pretty hooked. Here's my profile page at Sporepedia. I tried to upload a video Youtube, but I don't think that feature is working quite yet. Man is this game going to be sweet.

Here's some video of my latest creature:

Here's another one, Gappa the Triphibian monster!

Kevin Smith about talk Superman

I had mentioned this Kevin Smith bit in passing last week. It is long, but boy can he spin a yarn.

Congratulations its a ... squirrel?

The bunnies are grown and gone but this morning the new twin squirrels left the nest and played around for the first time. They aren't that afraid of us at this stage. More curious than anything.

Planets 8, Plutoids 2

In an attempt to appease angry Pluto supporters, the IAU renamed some dwarf planets as Plutoids.

These debates kill me in a Star Trek Convention sort of way:

Amanda Lucas Should Play Brienne of Tarth

Just saying. Here's a story about her recent MMA fight.

Donald Duck's Fascist Nightmare

I've long heard legends of this Disney short "In Der Fuhrer's Face" an Oscar-winning short built around the song of the same name by Spike Jones and the City Slickers. I sorta wish they'd built a dark ride at Disneyland around this cartoon. The over-the-top fascist imagery (dig the Hitler moustache on Donald's house) and the anthropomorphized bullets would be super trippy in real life.

Sunday's paper

Maybe you saw this or maybe not, but my uncle had a nice write-up in the star and trib business section

Story.

p.s. the newspape lies, my grandmother lives in an apartment in town...and is in an competition with about 3 other old ladies to get the best parking spot at church, so being close gives her an advantage.

butthead?

ARVADA, Colo. - Police in a Colorado town are searching for two robbers whose masks showed plenty of fashion sense but little modesty: women's thong underwear.

Weezer, I mean Rivers

Have any of you checked out the new stuff yet? I am reserving my final judgement for the moment. Because:
Rivers is a walking case of modern day hubris.
It is hard not to compare anything they do to Pinkerton, I mean Blue, I mean Pinkerton ...
Can you really hate on a band for trying something different?
(and because, shhhhh, The Rentals are better anyway)

4E

Penny Arcade's coverage of D&D's 4th edition made me interested enough to dig for more details. Warlocks, tiefings, unlimited spells (so I wont be using the cross-bow all day!), and online play. Where do I sign up? Someone please explain the lack of D&D chatter.

Optimus Prime for T-shirts, not Megatron!

Heathrow Airport security wouldn't allow this guy on the plane with this offensive Megatron T-shirt, supposedly threatening him with arrest. The guy explained 'I am an IT consultant, I need to wear Nerd Gear' but consented and changed his shirt. I wonder if they let him keep his shirt in his carry-on bag? Who knows he could take out that shirt and attempt to hijack the plane!

Real fans wear Optimus Prime and security just waves them through, as a picture of Optimus would burn the skin of a man with evil in his heart just like holy water on vampires.

$20 says that Transformers was also the in-flight movie.
