Grindhouse Sent Me On a Sample Hunt

Between the movies there's a scratchy old "Feature Presentation" reel with a perky soul track playing. It's the same song that Dangerdoom (MF Doom and Danger Mouse) sampled in their song "Old School."

Apparently Danger Mouse cut out some of the spaces in the drum break to make it sound a little more peppy, but you can still tell it's the same track. I'm gonna hit up some message boards and see if I can't find the original source. The tune's pretty hot.

Don't know if you guys dig hip-hop that much, but Talib Kweli's nostalgic rhymes in the song I linked are kinda great.

If you haven't already see my review in the comments to "City Pages Reviews Grindhouse Twice."

I don't like to dance. Because I suck at it. That hurts my ability to like hip-hop or dance music.

I don't dance much either. I find it really sad that for nearly all of history dance has been a way that people used to celebrate life, but now so many of us are too self conscious to enjoy it.

In hip-hop, most geeks (they call us "backpackers" because college aged white kids who like hip-hop usually wear them) make do with a little head bobbing.

Tim, does that mean you don't like listening to ballet music because you can't jump four feet straight up in the air while holding a woman over your head?

I had the same reaction--nearly jumped out of my chair when I heard that sample come up in the Grindhouse phony trailers. Anyone know what the original song is?

I'm still tracking the sample down. The source of the tune doesn't seem to be discussed much on the web at this point. But eventually every piece of music in a QT movie gets sourced, so I'm think we'll learn in the near future.

Soul Thing by Tony Newman.

According to the Funky Sixteen Corners blog, "Soul Thing" is likely a cover of Keith Mansfield's "Funky Fanfare."
