This movie is underrated by everyone but me.
John Lithgow! I never knew that.
Coincidentally, my Netflix history informs me that I just rewatched this again on 02/15/09 and rated it 3 of 5 stars. As I recall, I remember being pleasantly surprised after realizing the Russian chick was Helen Mirren, who I had just watched for 4 hours in Prime Suspect, and who is awesome. I also remember thinking Roy Scheider couldn't act his way out of a paper bag, though the relationship between HAL and his creator was genuinely moving.
I think I only gave it three stars because I felt the majesty of main storyline, which still kind of makes me shiver when I think about the possibilities, was overshadowed by mediocre dialogue and acting.
I remember having the hots for Helen Mirren when I saw the movie. I may even have owned a copy of Starlog with a pin-up.
I think all the movies I liked as a kid had mediocre dialogue and acting, but I didn't realize it at the time. I probably shouldn't watch them again, so I can continue to think well of them.
e.g. Krull. (Watched 3/20/09.) Wow. Awful.
When you're a kid (or an adult with no taste) content trumps delivery.
