I finally got around to listening to the first few Penny Arcade/PvP D&D podcast sessions. Series 1 is a basic primer on 4e and was super fun. It then gets even better when Wil Wheaton joins the party for Series 2 & 3, and they actually do some role-playing.
I also didn't know how to manually add a podcast subscription to iTunes, so these instructions were handy...
- From the dropdown menus, select Advanced --- Subscribe to Podcast
- When prompted for a URL, enter http://www.wizards.com/dnd/rsspodcast.xml and click OK.
So I'm not going to attempt another campaign-over-IP, but I think someone should start another one and we should have a session at each of the quarterly main events: Con of the Dorks, Wolf-fest, BGGcon/PAX/Gencon, and DockCon.
Going to pick up the 4e PHB this weekend.

I ready my sword.
Wolf, what do you think about picking up the DMG and running it?
I cast 'magic missile.'
In my pants.
You have to shake for that now.
I thought it might come to that.
Before I say yes, does anyone else want the honor?
Nope. It's all you, Wolf.
Everyone prepare yourselves for my dwarven paladin with a polearm.
Um, that is, my character will have the polearm. DO NOT prepare yourself with a polearm for my dwarven paladin.
Player's Handbook, Dungeon Master's Guide, and Monster Manual are in the mail.
Let's talk character options next weekend. I'll have the campaign ready for the next get-together.
I also heard in the podcast that they're using pre-printed class cards that appear to make life a lot easier for non-experts. I'll look into those.
What do people think about starting with characters at level 3?
I'm not opposed. Given that we'd be playing infrequently, it's not a bad idea.
