I am listening to a podcast of all currently available FFXIV Online information. It is bearable as far as podcasts go. One guy has a great voice for it, one guy keeps the show going with information ... and then I think there is a 12 year old that just says things or makes noises at times.
The reason for this post's being is Dock's quote in the title. FFXIV will not have EXP. There won't be as many little numbers becoming big numbers this time around. Character growth will be based on leveling skills and not the character. I wonder how this will work out and what Dock's thoughts are.

I don't see much of a change without XP. Increasing skills will work the same way, it's all numerical abstraction of strength or ability. I think EVE is skill based, rather than level based, and there is no shortage of numerical manipulation there.
Paper and pencil Shadowrun didn't have levels as such, either. Come to think of it, neither did Torg nor Twilight 2000 nor the White Wolf games (Vampire, et al).
Your small numbers still turn into big numbers, you just get a constant stream of improvement instead of a sack-full every once in a while.
I think the only thing we're losing is the ding. And in the case of FFXI the heart-wrenching level down. The dung?
