I can't stop thinking about this. I keep thinking that this is Usaji Yojimbo followed through to its logical, "Platoon"-like conclusion. I have, so far, managed to prevent myself from trying to draw any inferences as to the symbology of the universe presented here (why are they rabbits? what does that *mean*?) because I have managed to convince myself, so far, that to do so is folly. Clear, intellectualizing-for-its-own-sake, overthinking it folly.
Is someone really making this series-style? That's ambitious. I'll watch it.

from wikipedia
The manga depicts the characters as different animals according to their nationality as follows:
* American - Rabbit
* Vietnamese - Cat
* French - Pig
* Chinese - Panda
* Japanese - Monkey and Gorilla
* Russian - Bear
* Korean - Dog
* British - Rat
* Australian - Kangaroo and Koala
(+ Iranian (I assume) - Camel )
The depiction of Americans as rabbits is actually a pun on the Japanese word for rabbit. The Japanese word for rabbit is "うさぎ," which can be romanized as "USAGI." USA + GI = USAGI.
A computer-generated anime adaptation of Cat Shit One by Studio Anima is in the works.[2] The animated version was rumoured to revolve around the Iran hostage crisis, rather than Vietnam,[3], but a version of the trailer that includes non-official English subtitles indicates that the action takes place after 1991.[4] The series is due for release early 2010[5].

that list made me automatically think of
Maus: A Survivor's Tale by Art Spiegelman
I always new Usagi as in Usagi Yojimbo meant 'rabbit' but I never before saw the connection to USA GI. Hats off for that.
As far as the juxtaposition of cute furry vs killing machine,
There is a bunch of guys who are the #3 gun prop rental firm who chose the name Fuzzy Bunny Bovie Guns because too many of the comptition were naming themselves Tactical Elite Gun Stuff or similar.
